Royal Naval medals: an introduction

This podcast from the National Archives discusses the Royal Naval medal rolls held by The National Archives in record series ADM 171, and explains how to interpret the most commonly used codes and abbreviations found in them. It also demonstrates how the medal rolls can be used to locate other records relating to an individual’s Royal Naval service.


National Archives put more army and naval records online

World War One Indian Army medal index cards and Royal Naval officers’ service records are now available online at the National Archives Website.

Wills of Royal Naval Seamen (1786 – 1882)

Accident, disease and war were risks for seamen and many of them made wills to provide for their families in the event of death. As far back as 1698 the Admiralty had to deal with individuals impersonating deceased seamen or their executors, creditors or next of kin. They were trying to claim unpaid wages by forging wills and letters of attorney .
