I’m just finishing editing my father’s letters to his mother [1897 - 1921]. He attended The Old Ride from 1902 -06 when the Rev Rogers was head- and Mr Phillips [no relation] was deputy-head master. I have one group photo from that epoch. My father was very happy there and seemed to have got an excellent grounding before he went on to Harrow [1906 -10] and Cambridge [1910 - 13].
Anything on The Old Ride [a good picture?] would be great.
Best regards,
John Phillips

As a matter of fact, my father, Michael A Cooke, attended the Old Ride prep-school, possibly in Canford Cliffs, Bournemouth, from 1936 to 1939 before going on to Sherborne. Sadly he doesnt remember much about it! Is this the same school as you show in Branksome Park, I wonder? Also, my uncle, Robin M Cooke, was there briefly from about 1938 to 1941. Is this of any interest to anyone?….thanks, George Cooke

My husband’s grandparents Annie BURT and John SANDFORD were married in 1888 at Springbourne, Dorset. The person who married them was Thomas Henry BURT and one of the witnesses was Sarah Elizabeth BURT.
I would like to discover more about Thomas Henry BURT to ascertain if he was Annie’s brother or Uncle or perhaps no relation at all.
Annie was born at Kinson to John and Ann BURT any information about the family would be most helpful, we live in South Australia so finding this information is very difficult.

My father attended The Olde Ride in the very early 1900s. I still have his little school cap, that was made in London. I also have a class picture. My father was the youngest of 4, and was born in 1902. He passed away nearly 20 years ago. Their home was in Bournemouth.

Hi
My G Uncle, Charles Allis SMITH, born 1901, also attended this school. I wonder if he is in the class photo.

Was your G Uncle related to medical doctor William Allis Smith (1836-1914) who lived in my house, Denewood, and had relations: Rev’d Willoughby Allis Smith (1866-1940), Edith Allis Smith (1862-1959), Arthur Allis Smith (1864-1939)?

Hi Alwyn
Yes, indeed Charles was the nephew of the doctor William Allis-Smith and cousin of Arthur Allis-Smith.
I am very interested in the photos of Redmoor and Old Ride School.
Visiting the UK in May 2011 and will be in Poole.

Hi Carol,
If you’d like to meet up during your visit (I could show you a few odd deeds including your family’s names) drop me a line via Flickr, Facebook, or Ancestry.com/co.uk so we can exchange contact details.

Clifton College Archives
Willoughby Allis Smith (later W. A-S) mentioned here was at Clifton College Junior School briefly in 1879 before going to Sherborne (1881-4) then Clare Coll, Camb (BA 1889); ordained 1891. In the Clifton Register (1947) he is wrongly given the degree MB, doubtless by confusion with his medical kinsman William. His true career is set out in the Sherborne Register (1950). We would welcome a photograph of him

noticed your photo of St Peters Church of England School. Discovered recently that my father attended that school in 1920′s but understand school is no longer there???? However he was raised by his paternal grandmother or auntie who lived in Bournemouth and am wondering if they are buried in the grounds of St. Peters Church (are St. Peters Church and St Peters School related???0. Am having sooooooooooooooooooooooo many problems tracking down my fathers family so a name of his aunt/grandmother would be reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally useful! So are there any other photos of St. Peters School or articles on the history of the school and do you know where i could locate burial registry for St. Peters Cemetary. Can you help. Thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks. Andrea from Australia P.S. Father’s day Arnold Abraham 1917

Hello Andrea,
Just found your message.
I have seen a reference to an Arnold Abraham (NOT Lord Goodman), who died locally in the third quarter of 2002, though the ancestry.co.uk record gives his birth as 23rd June 1917 (which might be a transcription error). Might this be your father? Was he born in Lambeth (London)?
St Peter’s Church of England School closed in 1935 and is NOT connected to St Peter’s Roman Catholic Comprehensive (formerly Jesuit then De La Salle) School in Southbourne, which opened in 1936.
Limited information on St Peter’s Church of England School can be had from the histories of the church, in particular scattered througout “Bournemouth St Peter’s” by Ian McQueen, published in 1971 [SBN 902129 09 0]. Due to the very limited space in the churchyard, very few burials now take place there (most go to on of the Bournemouth cemeteries or local crematoria).
Do you have any further clues that might help track down your father’s family?

Hi Graham,
There were several in and around Bournemouth (such as Hailey, Collegiate, St Peter’s RC). I have scanned some entries and uploaded them to Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/alwyn_ladell/collections/72157624355618606/

I attended the Oratory Preparatory School, Martello Road, Canford Cliffs from 1947 till 1952 which I believe was located in the Old Ride school buildings. The OPS was located there from 1946 till, I believe the 1960ies.

The house, Haileybury, was designed by Basil Champneys in the 1870s but demolished in the 1970s. It became the Old Ride School (Headmaster Sydney Archer Phillips MA JP, d.23/08/1930). The Rev Thomas H Flynn was headmaster in 1939. It had about 60 boarding pupils in the late 1940s (Headmaster Mr A W Patton) and had become the Oratory Preparatory School (prep school for the Oratory, Oxford) with a gymnasium, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and two playing fields. Another decade later C H Maude MA was Headmaster. The school closed in the 1960s.

I went to the Oratory Preparatory School Canford Cliffs from 1951 to 1954. The headmaster when I started was Mr Patten and after Mr Bull. I remember Mr Bull calling the whole school to be told the King had died and for some reason a prefect called Short accused me, wrongly, of smiling at the news and ordered me to write out lines as a punishment. The Chapel had been converted from Anglicanism a matter of deep regret to one of the teachers a bad tempered veteran of WW I Mr Winters. The chaplain Father Robinson was an Anglican convert also. All in all I have happy memories of the school.

Dear Tim,
Yes, Mr. S. A. Phillips, B.A., is still listed as Headmaster of the Old Ride School in Mate’s Guide, 1930; but, by 1935, it was the Rev T. H. Flynn.
If you come across any records do please look after them. Much has been written about the maintained schools in and around Bournemouth but very little about the private schools. Peter Treleaven brought out a résumé listing about 200 but I am aware of others (and have several souvenirs of some). Methinks, when I finally publish my history of Westbourne and Bournemouth West, a more detailed survey might be justified.
