Between 1898 and 1942 Herbert Golledge recorded the events which occurred around the villages of Shoscombe and Single Hill in the parish of Wellow, Somerset, England. The following is a transcript of the Notebook he used provided by Ella Drew before her death. Ella was for many years the landlady of the Apple-Tree Inn at Shoscombe. Whilst the transcription is in page number order it would appear that this is not the order they were entered. It would seem that he started from the back towards the front, at some point switched to the front and then continued in both directions.

Josephine – just wanted to pass along a response to your message of 20 Jan 2008 about the HORLER-SWIFT-PORTER families. I am attempting to update my information about these families as we are going to have a Reunion over Labor Day in September. We haven’t had one for about 5 years.
I was born and raised in Johnston City, ILLINOIS and lived on the same street as Margaret Lockey, who was one of the daughters of Robert Atkinson Lockey, who was the 2nd husband of Minnie Horler, who was the widow of Christopher Swift. Hope that is not too confusing. That was one connection. I have been in contact with some of the “cousins” and have a few pictures of Minnie Horler.
My grt grandmother was Esther (TIMMINS) SWIFT, wife of Harry “Henry” SWIFT, and my grandmother was Grace (SWIFT) Porter.
If any of this rings a bell with you, I’d appreciate it if you could let me know. Thank you very much!

Hi Arnetta
My name is Christine Wood (nee Swift)
I have been doing family tree research as I am a descendant of the Wellow, Somerset UK Swift family. My great grandfather Joseph was the brother of Thomas who was the father of Christopher Swift who married Minnie Horler. I met their daughter Grace who was also married to a Lockey (John). They lived in Downers Grove. If you have any contact details for any descendants of Christopher Swift, I would be grateful. My email address is cwood518@aol.com
I look forward to hearing from you.

I read these remembrances with interest. I live in Southampton and I am the Grandaughter of Arthur Horler who went to America in 1904. He went to kentucky to do some mine work there and returned in 1907. He met again my Grandmother Nellie a Shoscombe girl and they were married. I can’t remember a lot and this is only what I have been told because I wasn’t born until 1943. I remember the Apple Tree pub and Ella Drew and of the Fellowship meetings that my gran talked about. My father was Leslie Albert Dowling who married Hilda Willcox from Peasedown and they had a shop in Peasedown after he returned from the war.

Dunkerton, a relatively modern pit, opened in 1905 and soon became the largest colliery in the vicinity. However it had a bad reputation, it being said that the owners were more concerned with profit than miners’ safety, and there were riots here during the 1908/9 strike. It closed in 1925

My mother grew up in Shoscombe in the first half of the last century: many of the people here are very familiar to me, and I am related to quite a lot of them; My grandparents were Albert and Gertie Riddick, both mentioned; these notes chronicle some happy and some very sad episodes in the story of my family.
